A Familiar Wound
Ceramic, 8 ½ x 6 x .5", 2025
A Familiar Wound is a realistic ceramic heart, pierced by a knife that can be either embedded or removed, a haunting metaphor for the shifting presence of grief. The piece captures that duality, the moments when sorrow feels fresh and sharp, like carrying a blade inside your chest, and the quieter ones when the knife is gone, but the gaping wound it left still aches. It speaks to a pain so intimate, so recurring, it becomes almost known, not welcome, but familiar. This sculpture embodies the endurance of heartbreak, the resilience it takes to move through the world while holding yourself together, even when you’re still bleeding from something that once was.
